Trails in Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Great Smoky Mountains National Park is one of the country’s deepest hiking parks, with nearly 200 named trails and more than 800 miles of footpaths threading through old-growth forest, high ridgelines, stream valleys, and historic backcountry. The range is impressive: plenty of easy walks for families and casual hikers, a strong lineup of moderate routes, and no shortage of difficult and even extreme trails for ambitious days in the mountains. You can spend a morning on a gentle creekside loop, tackle a steep half-day climb to a major overlook, or set out on a long backcountry traverse that feels truly wild. That variety is one of the Smokies’ greatest strengths: this is a park where beginners and seasoned hikers can both find exactly the right trail. Standout hikes help define the Smokies experience. Alum Cave to Mount LeConte is a classic, pairing dramatic geology with big-mountain atmosphere and some of the most satisfying climbing in the park. Chimney Tops is shorter but punchier, a steep, popular ascent with striking views and a real sense of payoff. For high-country hikers, the Appalachian Trail brings a legendary dimension, tracing the crest of the park for more than 70 miles and linking bald summits, deep gaps, and long-range vistas. Just as memorable, though, are the quieter trails that pass through rhododendron tunnels, hardwood coves, mossy creeks, and remnants of Appalachian homesteads. Hiking here feels immersive in every season—wildflowers in spring, dense green canopy in summer, crisp views and color in fall, and unexpected openness in winter—making the Smokies a park you can return to again and again without repeating the same experience.
