Fee-Free Park, Short Season: Timing Your Trip

There is no entrance fee to enter North Cascades National Park. The park is open all year, but its peak operational season runs from late May through late September, with limited services outside it.

Plan ahead for the off months, when you need to be self-sufficient.

By July, snow has cleared from nearly every trail apart from the highest ones, and mid-June through September is the stretch with the most settled weather. Higher routes such as Cascade Pass and Sahale Arm can hold snow into late June. Cascade River Road, a gravel route, is open only from July through October and serves as the access point for the Cascade Pass to Sahale Arm hike.

Day hiking is most common from April through October, and trails here span everything from brief, easy walks to demanding climbs. Storms roll through often, so carry rain gear and wind protection even when the forecast looks good. Backcountry trips in spring or fall need insulated, weatherproof layers and a tent.

Spring and autumn are the shoulder seasons, when crowds are lighter and car tours through the Skagit, Okanogan and Stehekin valleys are a good fit. Wildflowers reach lower elevations by late May, so the low trails are worth a visit in spring. In autumn, the Methow Valley around Winthrop and Mazama shows fall color, and wildlife sightings can be good. Winter is different: Highway 20, the main road through the park, typically closes from November into spring because of snowfall.

Reservations matter most in the busy months. Campsite bookings usually open several months before arrival, so reserve early for peak season. Roughly 40 percent of backcountry sites are set aside for walk-up permits, which you can collect either on the day you start or the day before. Backcountry permits come from the Wilderness Information Center in Marblemount or the Golden West Visitor Center in Stehekin, and many popular zones are assigned by lottery in spring.
