Camping in Haleakalā National Park

Camping in Haleakalā National Park comes in four distinct options, and that variety is part of the appeal. In the Summit District, Hosmer Grove offers the park’s classic frontcountry experience: drive-up tent camping in a cool, high-elevation setting that feels worlds away from Maui’s beaches. In the Kīpahulu District, the campground delivers a very different mood, with a lush coastal environment and easy access to the park’s wetter, more tropical side. For travelers looking for something more remote, the park also offers wilderness accommodations, including tent camping and historic cabins in the crater backcountry, giving experienced hikers a chance to spend the night in one of the most unusual volcanic landscapes in the islands. The camping experience at Haleakalā is defined by contrast. One night can mean crisp mountain air, silence, and star-filled skies near the summit; another can mean ocean breezes, birdsong, and the sound of rain or surf in Kīpahulu. Even the developed campgrounds feel immersed in the landscape, while the backcountry options deliver the park at its most elemental and dramatic. This is not a place for casual roadside overnighting, though—camping is only allowed in designated areas, and sleeping in vehicles outside campgrounds is prohibited. The reward for planning ahead is a night inside the park that feels far more intimate than a day visit. Practical planning matters here. Reservations are essential for campground and cabin stays, and popular dates often book out well in advance, with sites typically available up to six months ahead. Check current conditions before you go, especially for weather, road access, and any district-specific updates. Be ready for temperature swings in the summit area, where nights can be surprisingly cold, and pack for wet conditions in Kīpahulu. Pets are not permitted in campsite areas, and overnight stays in the park are capped at three nights total within a thirty-day period, so it pays to choose your base carefully and book early.

Hosmer Grove Campground

Hosmer Grove Campground

6 sitesReservable$5–$30/night

Six grassy campsites sit near the edge of a native forest and shrubland in the cloud belt of Haleakalā. Each site has a picnic table, a grill and access to water, and pit toilets sit in the parking lot. Mornings bring out native birds along a self-guided nature trail that starts and ends at the campground, so pack warm layers and rain gear, since the weather here can turn cold and wet.

Kīpahulu Campground

Kīpahulu Campground

9 sitesReservable$8–$30/night

Tent sites sit on a flat, grassy field above ocean cliffs, with hala trees offering some shade. A short walk leads to 'Ohe'o Gulch, and the Seven Sacred Pools are close by. Picnic tables and grills are provided, along with toilets, but there is no water or shower on site, so bring your own supplies. Expect rain, strong sun and mosquitoes, and note that leashed pets are allowed in the campground but not on trails.

Wilderness Cabins

Wilderness Cabins

3 sitesReservable$30–$75/night

Three historic cabins sit inside Haleakalā Crater, and reservations are required before you can stay in any of them. Kapalaoa lies at the base of the south-side cliffs, with views of brightly colored cinder cones and subalpine plants, while Hōlua sits in shrubland near Koolau Gap. Listen for nēnē overhead and the ʻuaʻu calling at dusk. Access is trail-only, with no ADA or wheelchair access and no RV or trailer sites.

Wilderness Tent Sites

Wilderness Tent Sites

10 sitesReservable$8–$30/night

Two primitive tent areas sit within the park's Wilderness Area, reachable only by trail. Hōlua lies in shrubland on lava flows near Ko'olau Gap, a base for day hikes into the central Wilderness Area. Palikū sits at the foot of a rain forest cliff, where fog and passing showers keep the valley cool and green. Expect pit toilets, and treat any water you collect, since it may not be potable.
