Old Rag: Shenandoah's Signature Boundary Climb
Old Rag is the most popular destination in Shenandoah National Park, and it is also one of the most demanding hikes in the park.

The Old Rag Circuit is a loop of about 9.4 miles that begins at the Old Rag parking area on the park boundary, so you can reach the trail without driving Skyline Drive. Most hikers take seven to eight hours to finish, with a total climb of about 2,348 feet.
Most hikers climb the loop by way of the blue-blazed Ridge Trail, a strenuous stretch of about 3 miles with a rope climb and a rock scramble. The scramble is the highlight, as you climb up and over enormous boulders on the way to the summit at 3,291 feet. Some hikers reverse the route, which means a longer ascent but may feel easier on the way down the scramble. On the descent, the usual path follows the Saddle Trail and Weakley Hollow Fire Road.
At the top, you get 360-degree views across the surrounding mountains and countryside. The hike is physically demanding and can be dangerous without planning, so review the planning guide in the app before you go. Pets are not allowed on this hike. Crowds build midday and on weekends, so arriving early helps with parking and with the rock sections where lines form. Bring sturdy hiking boots, plenty of water, and snacks.
Old Rag starts from a park boundary trailhead rather than Skyline Drive, and boundary trailheads are in remote areas with very limited parking. Some of these trails cross private land, so stay on the blazed trail and respect the landowners. Hikers on Old Rag also need a day-use ticket in addition to a park entrance pass, and the details are listed elsewhere in the app.
