Trails in Wind Cave National Park

Wind Cave National Park offers more than 30 miles of hiking routes across one of the Black Hills’ most compelling landscapes: a broad mosaic of mixed-grass prairie, ponderosa pine forest, rolling ridges, and quiet creek bottoms. The trail system suits nearly every kind of walker, from short, family-friendly loops to long backcountry-style outings. Rankin Ridge is the essential quick hike, delivering expansive views east toward the Badlands from a summit reached in roughly a mile. Prairie Vista and the Elk Mountain Campground Trail are easy one-mile loops and the park’s designated pet-friendly options, while Cold Brook Canyon and Wind Cave Canyon provide gentle longer walks through prairie habitat rich in birds and wildlife. For bigger mileage and more solitude, Wind Cave’s moderate and strenuous routes reveal the park’s wilder side. East Bison Flats crosses open rolling grasslands, Lookout Point combines prairie views with a glimpse of the 1999 burn area, and the Centennial Trail connects hikers with a celebrated long-distance route through the Black Hills. Strong hikers can take on the Highland Creek Trail’s 17.2-mile traverse of prairie and pine or climb Boland Ridge for wide-ranging views and a good chance of seeing elk. Hiking here feels wonderfully uncrowded and open-ended: bison, pronghorn, prairie dogs, elk, and rattlesnakes all share the landscape, and the park’s open-hike policy allows experienced visitors to venture beyond established trails with sound navigation, ample water, and careful attention to wildlife.

Highland Creek Trail

Highland Creek Trail

Difficult13.4 mi1,500 ft gainLoop

This route links several habitats in Wind Cave National Park, moving from open mixed-grass prairie into ponderosa pine forest and along the riparian corridors of Highland Creek, Beaver Creek and Wind Cave Canyon. Its variety makes it one of the park's most diverse hikes, with creekside stretches that contrast with the open grassland. You can start from the northern trailhead on NPS 5 or reach it with a one-mile walk down the Wind Cave Canyon trail.

Lookout Point Trail

Lookout Point Trail

2.2 mi490 ft gain

Rolling prairie hills lead this trail to Beaver Creek, with a short side climb to a high overlook. From the top you can look out over grassland that burned in an earlier prescribed fire. The route can be linked with parts of the Highland Creek and Centennial trails for a longer loop through the park's open country.

Prairie Vista Trail

Prairie Vista Trail

0.6 mi200 ft gainLoop

A loop through mixed-grass prairie that starts near the visitor center and passes the cave's natural entrance, where the air seems to breathe in and out. Waysides along the route explain the grasslands and the cave's history. Look for the gravesite of Alvin McDonald, who explored and mapped the cave by candlelight. It makes a relaxed walk before or after a cave tour.

Rankin Ridge Trail

The loop climbs to the highest point in Wind Cave National Park, where a historic fire tower stands, though the tower itself is closed to visitors. On a clear day, the eastern edge of the ridge opens toward the Badlands. Bison occasionally wander onto the loop, so be ready to retrace your steps. The trail begins off Highway 87 in the park's northern section, with parking beside the trailhead.

Cold Brook Canyon Trail

Cold Brook Canyon Trail

1.4 mi250 ft gain

The route winds down a canyon where ponderosa forest gives way to open prairie near the park's edge. Along the way you'll cross a prairie dog colony, a good spot to watch for prairie falcons and other raptors overhead. The start sits along US Highway 385 about a mile south of the visitor center. Expect a shift from shaded pine to wide grassland as you approach the boundary.

East Bison Flats Trail

East Bison Flats Trail

3.3 mi1,200 ft gain

A short, steep climb from the canyon route leads onto open prairie, where the land rolls in gentle swells as far as the eye can see. From the top, the view reaches Buffalo Gap and the Black Hills on the horizon. Bison roam the park's grasslands, so keep an eye out for them as you walk. With little shade on the open ground, bring water and sun protection.

Elk Mountain Nature Trail

Elk Mountain Nature Trail

0.7 mi260 ft gainLoop

This trail moves between open grassland and wooded forest near the park's only campground, so the change in habitat is clear as you walk. In September and October, listen for elk calling at dawn and dusk, and bring binoculars, since the area is good for birdwatching. The path is narrow with some steep grades, and dogs are welcome on a leash, though ticks and poison ivy are common, so keep to the marked route.

Boland Ridge Trail

Boland Ridge Trail

2.4 mi840 ft gain

A series of climbs carries you across rolling prairie with stands of pine, with the Black Hills rising in the distance. From the higher stretches, the view opens over Red Valley and the plains beyond. Elk are often spotted along the route in the early morning and evening, so those hours are a good time to look.

Sanctuary Trail

Sanctuary Trail

3.7 mi600 ft gain

Rolling prairie hills define this trail, which crosses a large prairie dog town on its way through Wind Cave's open grassland. The route meets the Highland Creek Trail, so it can link to other paths across the park. The popular Rankin Ridge Trail is within walking distance, which makes it convenient to pair the two for a fuller day outdoors.

Length is the full route as drawn on the Parka map, so out-and-back trails count both directions. Gain is the total ascent over that route.
