Beaver Marsh Ecosystem
Few places in the park hold as many kinds of wildlife as this wetland, and what you see depends on the month.
Frogs may fill the air with calls, and turtles can be spotted paddling between the lily pads. Look for a beaver gnawing on willow, along with great blue herons and otters. Northern cardinals sing from the trees around the water.
This ground was not always a haven for wildlife. It was first a farm, and later it became a salvage yard full of old cars and other debris. Volunteers came together for a community cleanup and hauled the junk away. Afterward, beavers blocked part of the Ohio and Erie Canal with a dam, and the water spread over the land. Wetland plants took hold, animals moved back in, and the marsh grew into one of the top spots in the park for seeing wildlife.
The Towpath Trail turns into a boardwalk as it crosses the marsh, with viewing platforms where you can look out over the water and plants. To reach it, start at the Ira Trailhead and walk about a quarter mile north along the towpath. Wheelchairs and strollers can manage the route. Crowds can build here, so keep to the right and be alert for cyclists coming past.
Scenery and wildlife make the marsh one of the park's most visited spots, which suits photographers and bird watchers. Animals tend to stir most in the early morning and again in the late evening, so those hours are a good bet. Ranger-led hikes explore the marsh's past and its animals, and the park posts a map of the area on its maps page.
Visitors who want to pitch in can join Citizen Scientists, who keep track of amphibians and birds at park wetlands. Wildlife Watchers, meanwhile, help other guests spot animals at the marsh and elsewhere in the park.
