West Mountain Trails and Overlook
The West Mountain trails are a set of short, interconnected paths that climb and wind around West Mountain.

They see less traffic than many park trails, which means more chances to spot wildlife. You can reach the network from downtown, Whittington Park, Prospect Street, or the top of the mountain off West Mountain Drive.
Canyon Trail runs 0.7 miles one way from a trailhead behind the Mountain Valley Water building downtown, and its section between West Mountain Drive and the West Mountain Trail is very steep. Mountain Top Trail covers 1.5 miles between Whittington Park and the network. Heading south on it is strenuous, while the northern direction climbs steadily until it meets the Sunset Trail, then drops steeply back to Whittington Park.
Whittington Trail is a flat, gravel loop of 1.2 miles around Whittington Park, popular with joggers and walkers. The West Mountain Trail gains elevation gradually in both of its sections. Bring plenty of drinking water, wear suitable shoes and clothing, and stay on established trails, since leaving the trail can be hazardous.
To drive up, follow Whittington Avenue to West Mountain Drive, turn right, and take the uphill branch at the fork. Look for a shelter with a parking lot; the trail is across the street or just to the right of the lot. Along the way, the drive gives access to lookouts, and parking areas at viewpoints and trailheads are found along the scenic drives.
Wildlife is a reason to visit, but watch animals only from a distance. If you would rather start in town, the Reserve Trail begins on Reserve Street, past the Libby Bathhouse and the Army and Navy Hospital, with its entrance on the left beside an apartment complex.
