Things to Do in Petrified Forest National Park

Petrified Forest National Park is one of the Southwest’s best windshield parks, a place where the road itself delivers a steady run of spectacle. The scenic viewpoints through the Painted Desert are the stars for anyone not looking to spend the day on trails: broad overlooks unfurl striped badlands, mesas, and open grassland in waves of red, mauve, gray, and gold. Blue Mesa is especially memorable for its surreal bands of color and sculpted formations, while Jasper Forest offers one of the park’s richest concentrations of gleaming petrified logs spread across the landscape below. Sunrise and sunset bring the Painted Desert to life, with low light deepening every color and turning classic stops like Chinde Point into showstoppers. Beyond the overlooks, Petrified Forest rewards visitors with a remarkable string of cultural and geological points of interest. Painted Desert Inn is the park’s architectural centerpiece, a historic landmark perfectly placed for desert views and a deeper sense of place. Farther along, Puerco Pueblo preserves the remains of an ancestral village and some of the park’s most compelling petroglyphs, while Agate House stands out as a rare reconstructed pueblo built from petrified wood. This is not a park for beaches in the traditional sense, but it does have its own version of shoreline appeal: wide, open “beaches” of badlands, gravel bars, and petrified wood fields that feel as stark and expansive as any coastal strand. The unique experiences here come from slowing down and treating the park as a moving gallery—stopping for the audio tour, scanning for wildlife on the grasslands, collecting passport stamps, and letting the scenery shift dramatically from north to south. Petrified Forest excels at easy discovery: a park where you can step out at a viewpoint, walk a short interpretive loop, and still come away feeling like you’ve seen something ancient, strange, and wholly unlike anywhere else in the national park system.
