Trails in White Sands National Park

White Sands National Park has five established trails, ranging from short, easy walks to demanding routes that lead deep into the gypsum dunes. The Interdune Boardwalk is the most accessible introduction, a half-mile round trip with interpretive stops, benches, and broad views across the interdune landscape. The brief Playa Trail and the one-mile Dune Life Nature Trail offer similarly approachable ways to explore the park’s quieter details, from dry lakebed scenery to the surprisingly resilient plants and animals that survive among the shifting sands. For a more immersive outing, the two-mile Backcountry Camping Trail crosses rolling 40- to 50-foot dunes and rewards hikers with expansive views toward the San Andres Mountains, especially near sunset. The signature challenge is the 4.5-mile Alkali Flat Trail, a strenuous loop through some of the park’s largest dunes. Despite its modest mileage, the constantly soft, loose sand makes every climb count, and the route delivers the rare feeling of being fully enveloped by the vast white dunefield. Hiking here is unlike hiking almost anywhere else: the ground gleams white beneath a huge New Mexico sky, the dunes erase familiar visual cues, and silence settles quickly once you leave the road behind. Trails are marked with colored posts and symbols rather than conventional paths, so route-finding demands attention—particularly in wind or heat. Start early, carry ample water, and treat the dunes with respect; White Sands is at its best when you slow down, follow the markers, and let the landscape’s scale take over.

Alkali Flat Trail

Alkali Flat Trail

4.3 mi660 ft gain

Trail markers lead you up and over rolling dunes, away from the road and into a quiet stretch of the dunefield. Near the far edge, the path reaches a salty expanse, the dry bed of an ancient lake that filled the Tularosa Basin in the last ice age. Shade is scarce, so bring plenty of water and sun protection. Blowing sand can hide the next marker, so watch closely and turn back if the trail disappears.

Backcountry Camping Trail

Backcountry Camping Trail

1.7 mi230 ft gainLoop

A loop through snow-white gypsum dunes, this trail offers much the same dune scenery as longer routes in the park, with less time on foot. Its name comes from the backcountry campsites it leads toward, but you don't need a camping permit to walk it. Expect soft sand underfoot and no shade or water once you are out among the dunes, so bring your own supply.

Dune Life Nature Trail

Dune Life Nature Trail

0.9 mi140 ft gain

This loop sits where desert scrub meets the gypsum dunes, so you'll see more plants here than in the dunefield's core. Fourteen trailside signs, led by a kit fox mascot, explain which animals live in the area and what they eat, though most wildlife stays hidden during the day. Expect soft sand, steep climbs up dunes, and little shade, so carry plenty of water.

Interdune Boardwalk

Interdune Boardwalk

0.2 mi13 ft gain

An elevated boardwalk carries you over the fragile interdune habitat, where plants and small animals have adapted to shifting gypsum sand. Along the way, ten interpretive panels explain the geology and wildlife of the gypsum dunes, while a shade structure halfway out offers a place to rest. The walk ends at a view across the dunes toward the Sacramento Mountains. Blowing sand can sometimes cover the boardwalk, so check with rangers before you go.

Playa Trail

Playa Trail

0.2 mi

This flat, sandy path leads across the edge of a dry lakebed, with interpretive signs along the way that explain how the landscape formed. It sits off the main dune field, so it suits visitors who want to learn about the park's geology before heading deeper into the dunes. Nearby, the Dune Life Nature Trail and a pair of viewpoints make natural follow-on stops.

Length is the full route as drawn on the Parka map, so out-and-back trails count both directions. Gain is the total ascent over that route.
