Camping in Black Canyon Of The Gunnison National Park

Camping at Black Canyon of the Gunnison is split between three distinct options, each with a different feel. The park’s main developed campgrounds sit on the South Rim and North Rim, giving campers direct access to overlooks, rim drives, and the canyon’s stark sunrise and sunset drama. There is also the East Portal campground at the bottom of the canyon, reached by a steep, winding road and set much closer to the Gunnison River. For travelers who want a more rugged outing, wilderness camping is also possible with a permit, but for most visitors the rim campgrounds and East Portal provide the classic overnight experience. What makes camping here memorable is the setting: a dark, sheer-walled canyon, a sense of isolation, and some of the clearest night skies in Colorado. South Rim camping is the most convenient for first-time visitors, with easier access and the park’s most visited overlooks, while North Rim camping feels quieter and more remote. East Portal offers a completely different mood, with the river nearby and the canyon walls towering overhead. Wherever you camp, expect dramatic temperature swings, limited services, and an atmosphere that feels more wild and intimate than many larger Western parks. Plan ahead and reserve early for summer and fall, especially if you want a developed campsite on the rim. Bring layers, plenty of water, and all the food and camping supplies you’ll need, since services in and around the park are limited. Keep in mind that the two rims are not connected داخل the park; switching from one side to the other requires a long drive on outside roads.
