Hiking to Lexington Arch

Lexington Arch rises above Lexington Canyon in a remote corner of Great Basin National Park.

At nearly 200 feet tall, it ranks among the world's tallest limestone arches. Unlike most arches in the West, which formed in sandstone, this one is limestone. That has led to speculation that it began as a corridor inside an ancient cave system. Flowstone, a smooth deposit that builds up in caves, has been found where the opening meets the ground, which supports the idea.

The hike to the arch covers 5.6 miles round trip from the Lexington Arch Trailhead, a makeshift start about a mile farther from the arch than the original. A past wildfire destroyed the road to the old trailhead and scorched nearby hillsides, putting the arch at risk. Today the route crosses mostly open slopes with little shade, passing shrubland and patches of old forest. The trail begins at 7,050 feet and gains about 1,220 feet, and it takes three to five hours and is rated moderate.

The hike starts in the Lexington Creek Area at the end of Lexington Creek Road beyond the park boundary. Head south from the Great Basin Visitor Center in Baker past Garrison and Pruess Lake, then turn onto the first dirt road on the right, signed for the arch. The dirt road is unimproved and rough, and it splits in places, so route finding is needed. Wet conditions may leave the route impassable. The Park Service has limited control over the road, which may stay open even in harsh conditions, so proceed with caution.

This is the only trail in the park open to pets, so dogs can come along. The path is rough and rocky underfoot, so wear sturdy boots, and carry plenty of water along with a snack. Conditions can shift fast here, bringing sudden rain or even snow, so pack for any weather.
