These campgrounds sit on gravel or dirt roads, often miles from gas stations, groceries, and other services, so a stay requires a little planning and the right mindset. Restroom facilities are limited, drinking water is not provided, and the atmosphere is much more about river access, starry skies, and campfire downtime than convenience. For many visitors, that stripped-back character is exactly the appeal: New River Gorge offers a classic riverside camp experience with fewer frills and more immersion in the landscape. Practical planning matters here. Campsites are first come, first served, there are no reservations, and there are no camping fees, so popular periods can fill quickly.
