Endless Wall and Long Point Cliff Hikes

Park trails run from a quarter mile to 7 miles, and the Endless Wall Trail is among the most popular.

This 2.8-mile loop starts at the Endless Wall Trailhead on Canyon Rim and takes most hikers one to two hours. It is rated easy to moderate, with about 400 feet of total ascent. The route follows a series of Nuttall sandstone cliffs rising above the gorge, and the overlooks along the way give views straight down into the New River Gorge.

The main viewpoint along the trail is Diamond Point Overlook. Turning back at Diamond Point makes the hike out-and-back, with the same distance each way. Finishing the loop means walking about half a mile along Lansing-Edmond Road, a roadside stretch many find less pleasant than the rest of the route.

The Long Point Trail is a 3-mile out-and-back hike, also rated easy to moderate, that takes one to two hours. Most of the route is level, though the final stretch drops steeply toward Long Point Overlook, where the New River Gorge Bridge fills the view. The climb back is short but steep at first. To reach the trailhead, park in the large lot on Newton Road, which has a pit toilet. Mountain bikes are permitted on most of the trail, so stay alert for riders.

Visitors who need an accessible route can still enjoy part of the Long Point Trail. A boardwalk viewing area sits within the first quarter mile, reached by an accessible path that starts at the parking lot, and it's a good spot to see forest regrowth and watch for wildlife. The overlook of the bridge itself is not accessible.

Trail running on the Endless Wall Trail is possible but challenging. Roots and stones cross the uneven tread, and narrow spots make it harder to pass other hikers. An early start may help you avoid the busiest periods.
