Caprock Coulee and Other Badlands Hikes
The Caprock Coulee Trail in the North Unit makes a loop of about 4.1 miles, and many visitors consider it one of the best hikes in the park.
It begins on the Caprock Coulee Nature Trail, a 0.8 mile stretch that introduces the striped rock layers and varied terrain of the badlands. Along the way, the nature trail passes through woodland so dense that it stands apart from the open country around it. Those who want a shorter outing can turn back at its end for a round trip of 1.6 miles.
Beyond the nature trail, the main loop climbs onto a plateau and passes River Bend Overlook. Next comes the highlight, as the path runs along the rim of the badlands and gives wide looks down to the Little Missouri River. Animals are often spotted from this stretch, so keep watch as you walk.
The Ekblom Trail and Big Plateau Loop offers a different mix of scenery. The route crosses grassland and colorful badlands before reaching the banks of the Little Missouri River, and wildlife is plentiful along the way. Mule deer have been seen on this route. For a bigger challenge, the Petrified Forest Loop stretches 10.4 miles and is rated strenuous.
Whichever trail you choose, pack spare water and a trail map, and wear footwear suited to uneven ground. On the nature trail, pause at every numbered post and read the matching text. Leave No Trace guidance applies everywhere: leave each place as you found it so the striped buttes and grasslands stay that way for the next visitor.
