The 24-Mile Capitol Reef Scenic Drive
The Capitol Reef Scenic Drive is a 7.9-mile paved road that suits passenger vehicles, and it forms the core of the park along with Highway 24.

Most drivers need about an hour and a half to cover it, not counting stops. Trailheads along the road give access to walks, so the drive also works as a starting point for hikes.
The first two miles pass through the Fruita Rural Historic District, where remnants of the old community still line the road. Look for the Gifford House and the many orchards along the route.
Two dirt spur roads leave the paved route. Grand Wash and Capitol Gorge both enter canyons and lead to trailheads, and each is usually suitable for passenger cars and recreational vehicles up to 27 feet long. The hour-and-a-half roundtrip estimate covers the Scenic Drive and both spur roads, so the side trips fit inside that time.
Hiking from the drive's trailheads is another way to spend time on the route. Plan for extra time on the trail, because walking off the road adds to the total visit. Hikes can start from the Scenic Drive, Grand Wash, and Capitol Gorge roads, so the spur roads offer walks as well as scenery.
