Things to Do in Crater Lake National Park

At Crater Lake, you do not need to lace up for a long trail to have a memorable day. The park is one of the great scenic-driving destinations in the West, and the 33-mile Rim Drive is the essential experience, threading together a parade of overlooks with constantly shifting angles on the lake’s famous cobalt water, Wizard Island, and the sheer walls of the caldera. Plan to stop often rather than rush the loop: Sinnott Memorial Overlook is the classic first look, pairing a broad, unobstructed panorama with a sense of the lake’s geologic drama, while Discovery Point, Rim Village, and the many pullouts along the rim turn a simple drive into a full day of sightseeing. Beyond the rim itself, roadside points of interest such as Vidae Falls and the wildflower-rich Castle Crest area add variety and remind you that this park is as much about volcanic landscapes, meadows, and forest as it is about the lake. For travelers who want more than viewpoints, Crater Lake also delivers a few singular experiences. The boat tour is the standout, dropping you from the rim down Cleetwood Trail to the water for the rare chance to see the caldera from lake level and, on some trips, step onto Wizard Island itself. That access also makes Cleetwood Cove the park’s best-known lakeshore and swimming area, a rugged “beach” experience defined less by sand than by the thrill of entering impossibly clear, intensely cold water beneath towering crater walls. If you prefer a quieter connection to the lake, fishing is another distinctive option and one of the few places in the country where you can cast in a national park lake without a state fishing license. Round out the day with time in the historic Rim Village district, sunset from a west-side overlook, and, if you stay late, some of the darkest and most rewarding stargazing in the Cascades.
