Grand Teton National Park is one of the great hiking parks in the American West, a place where the trails put you directly under a wall of jagged peaks, past glacier-fed lakes, through wildflower meadows, and into deep mountain canyons. The trail network is impressively broad, with 76 hikes spanning every level of ambition: a strong showing of easy routes, a healthy middle ground of moderate outings, and enough difficult and extreme terrain to satisfy serious hikers. That range is part of the appeal. You can spend the morning on a gentle lakeshore walk with wide-open Teton views, or commit to a long, leg-burning alpine day that feels genuinely rugged and remote.
For easy and family-friendly hiking, the park excels. Trails like Taggart Lake, String and Leigh Lakes, and the Lakeshore Trail deliver classic Grand Teton scenery without demanding huge mileage or elevation gain. At the more iconic end of the spectrum, the Jenny Lake area is the park’s hiking heart, with Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point offering a first-rate introduction to the landscape. Stronger hikers should keep going into Cascade Canyon, one of the park’s signature routes, where the scenery shifts from postcard-pretty to fully immersive mountain wilderness. For a bigger day, Lake Solitude is a favorite extension, while the Paintbrush Canyon–Cascade Canyon loop stands out as one of the park’s premier hikes, combining lakes, canyon travel, high alpine drama, and some of the best all-around scenery in the Tetons.
What makes hiking here special is the immediacy of the landscape. The Teton Range rises abruptly from the valley floor, so even shorter hikes feel dramatic, and longer trails quickly carry you into terrain that feels wild, raw, and beautifully unforgiving. Wildlife sightings are part of the experience too—moose, elk, and bears are all part of the park’s living backdrop—so every hike carries a sense of real immersion. Grand Teton is not just a park with good trails; it is a park where nearly every trail delivers a memorable sense of place, whether you want an easy scenic stroll or a demanding backcountry-style adventure.
