Crossing to Boquillas del Carmen, Mexico
The Boquillas Crossing Port of Entry is the gateway to the small village of Boquillas del Carmen, Mexico.

It sits near Boquillas Canyon, between Rio Grande Village and the canyon, so it fits neatly into a visit to the park's eastern side. Park in the crossing lot and walk through the port of entry building. Because you will pass through Border Control, bring a valid passport.
From the port, a short walk along the Rio Grande leads to the crossing point. Small rowboats ferry visitors across the river, and the trip is short. The ferry costs five dollars per person round trip, so bring cash. Once on the Mexican side, you check in with Mexican immigration officials and receive a small wrist bracelet, which serves as your receipt. Local guides wearing official identification are available to help. Most visitors spend only a couple of hours in Boquillas.
The village is about half a mile from the crossing along a sandy road. You can walk, or you can pay an extra fee to ride a burro, horse, or vehicle. Walking across the river itself is allowed only at the crossing, and it is not recommended when the water runs high. Staying overnight in Mexico requires a temporary visa. The village lies within the Maderas del Carmen Protected Area.
The Rio Grande forms the boundary here, and Big Bend shares 118 miles of border with Mexico. The border has changed over time. For much of its history, people moved freely across the river. After security concerns grew following the September 11 attacks, the crossing was closed from 2002 to 2013 before it reopened. Visitor dollars help the town's economy, so paying for the ferry, a ride or a guide is a direct way to support it.
