Things to Do in Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve

Great Sand Dunes rewards visitors who do far more than simply set out on foot. In late spring and early summer, this shallow, sandy stream creates one of the most memorable natural play areas in any national park, where families splash, wade, and relax at the base of the dunes as if they had stumbled onto a mountain-fringed shoreline. It is one of the park’s signature scenes and easily one of the most unusual beach outings in the West. Beyond daylight hours, Great Sand Dunes delivers another standout experience: nightfall. As an International Dark Sky Park, it is a superb place to stay after sunset for star-filled skies, moonlit dunes, and a sense of quiet that feels almost otherworldly.
